Gouache, mon amour!

Blå fisk i gouache

Getting the best out of an ultimate watercolour
When we hear “watercolour”, we often think of washy landscapes painted with plenty of water. But there is another multifaceted technique called “opaque watercolour” or gouache which often remains forgotten. A pity, because gouache has probably been the most popular technique for illustration and small-scale painting for several centuries. Just think of Albrecht Dürer's hare, poster and magazine illustrations in the 20th century or the picture books of recent times.

Gouache can be used transparent (similar to watercolours) or opaque (like oil or acrylic paints). In addition, gouache remains water-soluble even after drying, so that parts of a picture can be changed. In this workshop we will systematically go through wide-ranging techniques of gouache and see which fit your particular style and temperament. You will benefit from Aljoscha's experience as a renowned illustrator and gouache expert.

In addition to practical work on amusing exercises Aljoscha Blau will demonstrate his original gouache illustrations and show his techniques. He recently wrote the reference book “Rediscovering Gouache. A new approach to a Versatile Technique for Contemporary Artists and Illustrators”, which has been translated into six languages since 2020.

This workshop is suitable for beginners with basic drawing skills and for advanced students.
