Classical art
At Day School, you will become part of a creative environment, with classical art at the center. The main focus will be on classical drawing, but you will also receive a two-week introduction to oil painting. If you wish to paint for more than these two weeks, you can sign up for the 5-day class and paint every Friday.
You will alternately work on quick sketches and longer studies, both from still lives and from a model. Since we pride ourselves on not working from photographs, students will sometimes be asked to sit as portrait models for each other.
Drawing
At TegneskoleKBH, we have an analytical approach to drawing, meaning we focus more on the spatial structure of the subject than, for example, the surface (texture) of the subject. Analytical drawing is haptic rather than optical, which means it is like making a sculpture on paper. Analytical drawing is no longer as widespread in the West, so throughout the course, you will likely gain a completely new perspective on what drawing is.
Unique offer
You will not find similar offers elsewhere in Copenhagen. The combination of high professionalism and the longer duration makes the Day School at TegneskoleKBH a unique offer in Copenhagen.
Furthermore, our approach to classical art is significantly different from most other schools’, as we often work with models and have a strong focus on the analytical-spatial and dynamic aspects of art.
Teaching method
As a student at the Day School, you should expect a lot of feedback, both in the form of individual guidance and group critiques. We often start the day with theory or short exercises and end with a group review and critique of the day's work.
Please note that it is expected that you do homework from week to week. Therefore, it is not possible to combine the Day School with full-time work or other classes — there simply isn't enough time. You are here to learn The Day School is a place for those who are ready to receive instruction. This means it is perfectly fine if you don't know everything in advance — we actually expect that! That said, we do expect that you bring along some previous basic experience with classical drawing, and if you don't, we strongly recommend that you start by taking some of our evening classes before enrolling in the Day School.
Dare make mistakes
At times, receiving criticism can be a tough call, but remember that all development is difficult, and the criticism is not about you as a person, but solely intended as help for your progress as an artist.
Materials
All model costs are included in the course fee. The school will also provide easels and drawing paper, but you are responsible for bringing your own pencils, brushes, and paint. You can find lists of the materials you need to bring on this page, but you don't need to have everything ready from the first week, as long as you have pencils with you.
Discount for returning students
If you choose, as many do, to take multiple semesters at the Day School, you can look forward to a 10% discount on the course fee from the 2nd semester onwards.
